French Wines
France is the home of many grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. Terroir, which links the style of the wines to the specific locations where the grapes are grown and the wine is made is an important concept for French Wines. Appellation rules, called Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), closely define which grape varieties and winemaking practices are allowed in different appellations, which can cover entire regions, individual villages or even specific vineyards.
There are many wine regions in France producing wines with different characteristics, please choose a wine region from the below map or the navigation on the left to see more information about those regions.
Wines from different regions can be identified from their bottles. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace and obviously Champagne all have very typical bottles shapes which are easy to recognize.
